WELCOME TO BLUE MOON AKITA RESCUE AND THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO VISIT WITH US TODAY ....

Blue Moon Akita Rescue
Who has the bigger smile?

Incredible as it seems, we're well into fall and on our way to winter 2011.  The Akitas are really enjoying the cooler weather.  The first snow storm of the season was accompanied by high winds and we had a huge maple limb land in the yard.  The good news is that no one was under it and the bad news is that we are unable to use two of the kennel runs because the limb is very effectively blocking access to the area ... so there's a fun project that we need to devote time to PDQ.

... and yes, I'm still behind with the web site and am trying to make myself a promise to devote at least an hour a day to making it better, so ... please hang with me and remember I'm kinda an army of one over here ... so I  may need to call in the Marines for some help.

So far this fall Harley, Magic, Dodge, Jasmine, Hollister and Clover are happily placed.  And Rhey, Buster, Chief, Meika, and Atty continue to wait for that forever family.   Sadly, there are always more dogs waiting to join usm and from South Carolina we have a pretty girl name Cota who is packing her bag to catch a ride to Colorado; Fritz is saddling up in Salina KS to catch a ride, and a young Akita boy named Ryder is looking for a ride from Mississippi.   Please take the time to visit our ADOPTABLE ORPHANS tab (left margin of this page, click it)

.... and the litter of Siamese kittens we took in from Lawrence KS have been placed, and we were recently "gifted" with a surprise box of 3 week old kittens.  The kids are now eating from a dish, litter trained, playing with Akitas and real little cuddle bugs.  They will be ready to go to new homes around Thanksgiving.

Please be patient with us -- I work full time, take care of the orphans and still do some training so I  am not always able to update the web site or answer e-mail as quickly as I would like.   It seems like I am always running behind.  I do enjoy hearing from all of you and hope at some point to get caught up enough to start adding notes and Akita pictures from website visitors, so please keep writing and know that I will reply to you.

As always I do appreciate those helpful e-mails pointing out the various typos that I make and I will endeavor to quickly both answer your e-mail and get that typo fixed as quickly as possible ... so please do me a favor and read through the whole site.  I rely on you to be my proofreader!

Thanks for visiting us.  Enjoy your day and take time to tell family, friends and (of course) your animals how very very much each of them means to you.  We can never hear words of kindness, appreciation  and love spoken too often.

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS  ... at Blue Moon our mission is to adopt the right dog to the right home with people who will love and care for him the rest of his life.  Here's what that looks like.

IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIME VISITOR TO BLUE MOON ...

Thank you for visiting us here at Blue Moon Akita Rescue.  Whether you are looking for an Akita or just want to learn more about these fascinating dogs, I hope we'll have some information to help you.  Wander through the site and if you don't find what you are looking for, please drop me an e-mail (karena@bluemoonakitarescue.com) and I'll be happy to try to either answer your question or point you in the right direction (folks say I'm really good at telling people where to go...but please write me if I can help).

Behind the scenes, we are so very grateful to Kibo's dad (Don) at Red Ink Designs, who adopted Kibo sabout years ago and shortly thereafter suggested that we needed a web site.  We readily agreed but said we had no money for web hosting, etc.   Kibo's parents, Don and Stephanie, then put up the site and have donated it to us.  My job is to keep updating the info ... if you need a web host, you may want to contact Don at Red Ink Designs in Loveland ("Don Oft" <info@redinkwebdesign.com>).

We are also extremely grateful to Broadview Kennels in Aurora CO.  They are a superior boarding, training, grooming facility with separate accommodations for small dogs and cats.  The place is clean and well run, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and I'd like to clone the owner/trainer, Bob, as he's a miracle worker.  If you are looking for a clean and well run place for your dog to stay in safety, please visit Broadview Kennels in Aurora; if you have any training needs, contact Bob as he is amazing and a credit to the training community.  http://denver.citysearch.com/profile/1790235/aurora_co/broadview_kennels.html

If you are in the Denver/Aurora Colorado area and looking for a good veterinarian who is knowledgeable about Akitas (and cats, ferrets, birds, reptiles) ... we happily recommend Dr Steve Feldman DVM of Vet Care Animal Hospital.  He takes wonderful care of so many of our orphans and is sympathetic to the plight of rescue animals.  If you're looking for a glitzy vet practice, this isn't the place, but if you are looking for quality vet care at an affordable price, please consider Vet Care Animal Hospital located just off Monaco and Leetsdale in Aurora, CO.  http://www.bing.com/local/details.aspx?lid=YN138x2736705&qt=yp&what=vet+care+animal+hospital&where=Colorado+80126&s_cid=ansPhBkYp02&mkt=en-us&q=vet+care+animal+hospital&FORM=LARE

If you are new to the Blue Moon site, you'll notice we are a little different in that we're kinda homey and just talking about our Akitas.  We hope you enjoy your visit with us and will check back periodically.  Because situations change, you'll see that our site is always a work in progress and will continue to change, adding new orphans to join our Adoptable Akitas pages, new Success Stories as Blue Moon orphans find homes and respectfully honoring new additions to the Rainbow Bridge.

If you see something you really like, (or don't like) ... please do give us the gift of feedback by writing karena@bluemoonakitarescue.com -- I always respond, but sometimes it takes a couple of days as I also have a "real" job that seems to take a big chunk out of my day, but we are grateful as heck as it helps buy dog food.

IF YOU LIKE HAPPY ENDINGS ... please also look at our Dogs Placed tab (on your left) and also the Success Stories page (and I'm always behind in getting things  updated so I apologize for that).  Also you can see more of our Blue Moon Akitas with happy endings at http://caretransport.org/stories/akitas.html

IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE ORPHANS  ... please look at our SUPPORT section for the various ways you can assist us with your time or support.     We so appreciate those of you who give of your time and talents to help us.   Every one of you makes such a difference; you are all so incredible.  We appreciate your visits to our website and you remembering us in your thoughts and prayers each day.  Thanks.

Learn About the Akita

Are you the perfect family for one of our current Akita orphans?  Maybe, and maybe not.  Would you get a Mini Cooper when you really need an F350 crew cab?   The Mini Cooper might be cute as heck but if you need a crew cab, doubtful you're going to get the Mini.  Inversely, who doesn't love a big truck?  Well, if you never haul anything and live in a tiny apartment or have zero parking available and gas is expensive ... the Mini looks really good doesn't it?  OK, selecting a dog works the same way.  You need the right tool for the right job and you need the right dog to fit your lifestyle and needs.  The difference between dogs and tools is if you buy the wrong tool for the job, you either exchange it or give it to someone and go get anoither ... a responsible dog owner doesn't do that and if you are now saying "why not" ... save yourself the pain of dealing with me please and just go to a different website.  I love my dogs and the people who adopt them and I'm happy to teach anyone everything I can about the Akita, but I really need somebody I can work with, so ... .

I'm going  to take a leap of faith here and say you are still reading because you recognize that dogs have feelings and tools don't.  Now that we're in agreement on that basic truth, you're ready to learn more about the Akita.  That's great.  As you start considering whether you want an Akita in your life, I need you to remember that not everyone wants/needs/likes ice cream.  Not a thing wrong with that, and not everyone wants/needs/likes Akitas and there is nothing wrong with that either.

The same thing applies to breeds of dogs; one breed/one size does not fit all owners and it does the dog an injustice to think otherwise.  Just because I can't envision not having at least one Akita, that does NOT make them the ideal breed for everyone visiting this site.  We love all of our guests and understand that probably 90% of you aren't going to adopt an Akita.  That's ok .. stay awhile and come back to visit often.

Before you get a dog, please think about your lifestyle and whether a dog fits into you and your family's lifestyle.  It's great to watch folks in the park play frisbee on Sunday.  But remember -- they go home and the frisbee goes into the closet until next Sunday.  The dog who was catching that frisbee in the park also goes home but he does not go into the closet until next week.  For the other six days of the week, that dog is looking to his family to meet his daily needs for love, food,  sleeping, peeing and pooping,  He isn't there to judge you but if you have had a bad day at the office and are looking for someone to take it out on -- go to the gym and work out -- don't get a dog.  Every dog needs a responsible owner to ensure that those basic needs are met.  Every day of the year.  He needs someone to take him to the vet when he's sick and someone to teach him appropriate behaviors and to love him when he messes up.  If that's not you, go to the garden store and get a nice fern.  Then you've got something living at home and you're not messing with a pet's head.

No companion animal should be an impulse purchase.  This is particularly true if the cute puppy you are looking at is going to grow into a powerful dog who by instinct bonds with his family and will guard them with his life.  The cute puppy is going to grow into a highly intelligent dog who not only NEEDS a job and training, he wants them.  Akitas are a little like water -- if there is a void water flows into the empty space and fills it:  if there is a void in leadership in a home, the Akita is going to think that means he should be in charge.  So if you are not willing and able to give your Akita the leadership he needs, please consider starting a lifetime of pet ownership with something a little less demanding.   Goldfish are a nice place to start.

Please take some time to learn about the Akita and certainly we would love to answer any questions you may have.
